GroEL is a complex of 14 identical proteins forming a barrel with a large cavity inside. Misfolded proteins are refolded inside this barrel. After a protein enters the barrel, a 7 protein complex called GroES caps one end and a large conformational change occurs requiring hydrolysis of 7 ATP molecules.
