Prof. Alex McPherson's lab at UC Irvine studies virus structure using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The Resource for Biocomputing, Visualization, and Informatics is collaborating with the McPherson lab to create new methods to analyze and visualize AFM data. An example of this collaboration is the averaging of AFM data. The image at the right shows an AFM scan of crystals of satellite tobacco mosaic virus particles. Data from hundreds of virus particles has been averaged in order to visualize the arrangement of proteins on the virus capsid.
