This is a plane of a crystal composed of satellite tobacco mosaic virus particles. Three particles are represented by the carbon alpha backbone of the capsid protein while the remaining particles are represented as contour surfaces of the atom density. The red bars show the particle spacing along the two lattice axes. This crystal plane image was created for comparison to an atomic force microscope data.
