The server version of VMware costs many thousands of dollars but lets 
you log out.
On the other hand, with the Linux version of VMware (linux host, linux 
guest) you can
run VMware on VNC and never worry about the desktop user logging out. 
 Machine shutdown
is still a problem, however.
