My local Chimera python is Python2.3, and it works fine when I run the file with
it. It is only when I run the file through the Chimera Idle version that it
doesn't work.

Can you please try the same thing with Chimera's version of Python?
It's in $CHIMERA/bin/python2.4, where $CHIMERA is where you installed
