Frequently, these weird errors are solved by updating the graphics
driver. If you have an NVidia or ATI graphics card, you can install the
latest driver from the vendor, but you'll need to reinstall every time
your kernel is updated -- the closed source drivers are still much
better than the open source ones, so it's usually worth the pain. If
you have Intel graphics, you'll probably need to wait until your Linux
distribution has a major update (you need to update the mesa packages).
If you use chimera's Report a Bug dialog to submit this as a bug, it
will tell me more about your system so I'll be able to make a specific
recommendation.
