Hi John,

  I bet your virtual PC has only the Microscoft GDI graphics driver supporting OpenGL 1.1 from 1997 — that graphics driver has so few capabilities Chimera can’t select atoms.  You will need a better graphics driver for ctrl-click to select atoms.  You can check which graphics driver Chimera is using using Chimera menu entry Help / Report a Bug… in the “Gathered Information” field.
