[chimerax-users] Stereo and VR support

Hi Gökhan,
It would be nice if the graphics pane were undockable. I have used it full screen by undocking the toolbar, command line, and side tool panels, but that is a big pain. The trouble is Qt has a set layout with a main area (the graphics) that is not dockable. We could probably implement some work around that puts the graphics in a separate window and removes the main area graphics. It could be nice for dual display setups, or stereo. For stereo with LCD glasses or other means there are almost no viable technologies. We have found it quite challenging to keep our old LCD glasses stereo system working. NVidia dropped all support for 3D Vision more than a year ago.
DTI stereo? I couldn't find a any display online that supports that, not even anything from 5 years ago. Is there a currently sold device that uses it? Or how long ago was the last such device sold? It is not too likely we could add this unless there are a fair number of users.
ISOLDE can be used in VR. Tugging in VR works too (added about 6 months ago). The performance is remarkably not bad even though both VR and the MD are running on the graphics card. But I would not say it is usable, because like any molecule analysis in VR, without a keyboard it is going to be very hard to do some of the steps you want without taking the VR headset off. But it is our goal to improve this.
Of the stereo technologies we are working on VR and funding can be obtained (although we have none currently). But the older stereo technologies appear to be dead.
