Hi Tony,
There is a ChimeraX command "graphics driver" that reports in the Log panel what graphics driver you are using. Definitely the graphics will not work if it does not support OpenGL 3.3 so you must have that.
By the way OpenGL 3.3 came out in 2010. So almost any new driver will have OpenGL 4.5 or 4.6 support and those all provide 3.3 support which is what ChimeraX requires.

It looks like it only has OpenGL ES version 3.2, OpenGL version 3.1, and my host computer (Windows) has OpenGL version 4.6. I don't get any warning when launching ChimeraX in my VM. My Oracle VirtualBox version is 6.1.26 r145957. I've only used it couple of times, and I don't recall changing any settings. I don't know why it works for me and not you, but let me know if I can share additional info or settings.

The Ubuntu desktop environment I installed (Unity) is one of the desktop environments with a magical setting that made my menus disappear. I don't think I'd recommend using a VM outside of debugging things like this if you can run a native version of ChimeraX.
