Hi Yiannis,
Without seeing your exact commands or files, it is hard to tell what went wrong.
All I can say is:
Get a reasonably new version of ChimeraX (in case you are looking at documentation newer than what you downloaded).
All the maps must have the same grid size (numbers of points in each dimensions).

Use the "open" command with option "vseries true" ... that would indeed show just the first frame of the volume series, but you could play through it with the "vseries" command or slider interface.
