Dear Elaine,
thank you for your response and sorry for being
unprecise. The chimeraX icon in the launchbar jumps up and down when I try
to start chimeraX by clicking on the icon but nothing else happens. The
program does not start and there is also no error message. We have found
some more computers where this happened (all with different combinations
of OS and chimeraX) and for some of them updating to the newest chimeraX
version solved the problem, however, not for all. For one of them I also
tried using the command line to start the program. I could open chimera
that way but not chimeraX (also no error message in the terminal).
I
am on Hollidays next week, but I will try your suggestions once I am back
and let you know if I can resolve the issue that way.
Thank you very
much for your help and have a nice weekend.
Best
wishes,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

"does not work" is not much information.... do you mean that it
doesn't start at all?

I have a laptop running OS 10.15.7 and it can run ChimeraX 1.1, 1.2.5,
1.3, and 1.4 releases just fine. I tried them all today. The first time I
started 1.3 it gave some orange warning messages and suggested I should
update to 1.4, but I could ignore those and keep using it without
problems. It may have been related to a bundle I installed from the
Toolshed, I'm not sure. The second time I started 1.3, there were no
warning messages.

My only guess is that something weird got stored in your preferences, or
previous files list, or other settings that interferes with the startup,
but I don't know. There are several different settings files so I hesitate
to say to delete them when we don't even know whether they (or which one)
might be causing the problem. On mac these files are written into
~/Library/ApplicationSupport/ChimeraX/ where "~" is your home
directory, e.g. /Users/meng in my case.

One idea to try to get some information is to try to start ChimeraX from
Terminal, e.g. if installed as /Applications/ChimeraX-1.4 then you could
type this in the Terminal window to start it

/Applications/ChimeraX-1.4.app/Contents/macOS/ChimeraX

...and see if any error messages appear in the Terminal window.

I hope this helps,

Elaine

There is no error message so I am a bit lost at what I can do to resolve
this issue. The macOS is 10.15.7.
