Just to follow up. I tried VMware Workstation 16 Player on Windows 10
(free for non-commercial use), and ran Ubuntu 20.04 in it. And I was
able to run ChimeraX in the virtual machine after I enabled "3D
graphics" in the Display settings. I also increased the amount of
graphics memory allocated, but it is unclear if that was necessary. The
host machine is running Windows 10 with an NVidia GeForce GTX 970 and
the latest graphics driver. So there exists at least one virtual
machine product that can do OpenGL 3.3 (4.1 in my case) if the host is
powerful enough.
